Part Three

Nysia knew she was facing a terrible punishment now. She’d tried to escape, and been caught in the act--by Sabi herself, no less. If the burns on her feet were bad, she could only imagine the pain the orc queen must have in store for her.

Sabi said nothing as she carried Nysia through countless more twisting, turning passages. Finally, they entered another huge cavern, and Sabi pulled the elf down from her shoulder. Setting her on top of a soft, woven mat, the orc queen yelled out in her guttural native tongue. Looking around in confusion, Nysia saw a half-dozen orcs laid out on mats like hers. Each of them was somehow injured, or looked to be sick.

It took her another moment of wondering what those orcs had done to earn Sabi’s wrath before she realized where she was. Sabi had taken her to an infirmary. The orc who scurried out at the sound of his queen’s command wore a white robe, and carried a heavy book under one arm.

Sabi and the robed orc spoke to each other for a few minutes, each of them looking down at Nysia now and then, or gesturing towards her feet. Finally, the orc healer set down his book, knelt down in front of Nysia’s mat, and began to examine her--prodding her feet, lifting her legs up to take a closer look, and ignoring her flinches and little whimpers of pain. Sabi watched impassively from behind him.

When he turned to her and spoke again in orcish, Sabi sighed. She nodded.

Nysia could only watch helplessly while the healer began spreading some kind of salve over her skin and Sabi turned to leave her there with him. She counted three days, judging by the times she was fed and the comings and goings of the healers, from the time when she was left on her mat. On the fourth day, Sabi returned.

Nysia’s feet had all but healed completely by then, and Sabi wasted no time on pleasantries. She tied her leather thong around Nysia’s neck, then picked her up to carry her out. Stopping briefly to speak to the healers again, she seemed almost grateful. What would happen next? Nysia could only guess. If she needed to be healed for it first, it was sure to be a terrible torture.

With the elf still slung over her shoulder, Sabi carried her through more passageways and finally, into her chambers again. Nysia looked around her in confusion. Sabi laid her down on top of the cushions. The orc woman paced back and forth in front of her for a few minutes while she watched with growing uncertainty.

Finally, Sabi turned to stare at her, gold eyes burning. She stormed forward, and grabbed a fistful of long, blonde hair. Lowering her face within inches of Nysia’s, the orc woman growled at her.

“What in all the hells were you thinking?”

“I--I’m sorry!” Nysia whimpered, and tried to lower her gaze. “I just-- I wanted…”

“What was I thinking?” Sabi interrupted her, giving her hair another hard tug before releasing it.
